The Morgan County Historical Society manages three historic homes in downtown Madison – Heritage Hall, Rogers House, and Rose Cottage. A guided tour of all three locations may be purchased to uncover the diverse stories of the people who built their lives in these distinctive homes representing different eras, backgrounds, and economic classes through Madison’s history. This includes Rogers House, c. 1809, one of the oldest homes in Madison, built in the popular Piedmont Plain style the same year of the City of Madison’s incorporation; Heritage Hall, c. 1811, a time capsule of how some of Madison’s wealthiest citizens lived before the Civil War; and Rose Cottage, c. 1891, the Folk Victorian home of a working-class African American woman that was born into slavery and later widowed with two children in the post-Civil War South.
