Originally part of the Milledgeville town plan of 1803 as one of the four public squares, this area later became known as Cemetery Square. Notable figures in Milledgeville and Georgia history, including L.Q.C. Lamar, Congressman Carl Vinson, and Flannery O’Connor, as well as early Georgia governors, legislators, college presidents, enslaved individuals, and soldiers, find their final resting place here. The cemetery offers a self-guided walking tour that commences at the gazebo at the front, guiding visitors through 47 points of interest marked by numbered signs corresponding to a downloadable brochure available on their website or for pickup at the entrance gazebo.
