Since its establishment in 1842 as the Georgia State Lunatic, Idiot, and Epileptic Asylum, the Central State Hospital Campus in Milledgeville has been a prominent and intricate site. In the 1960s, it gained international attention as the world’s largest mental institution, hosting over 12,000 patients, 6,000 employees, and encompassing more than 8,000 acres of land. Today, the hospital continues to serve over 200 patients and has scaled down to approximately 2,000 acres. The campus remains active year-round, offering various experiences across its grounds.
